Why am I bloated after eating?

Updated 29 October 2026

Most bloating after meals is gas: from foods your gut ferments, from swallowing air, or from eating a big meal quickly or late. Constipation, a food intolerance, IBS and your period can all add to it. If it happens regularly, keeping a short food and symptom diary for a few weeks is the quickest way to find your own cause.

The usual causes

  • Gas from foods your gut ferments, such as beans, lentils, cabbage and onions.
  • Swallowing air: eating fast, talking while eating, fizzy drinks, chewing gum.
  • Large meals, especially late at night or eaten slouched.
  • Constipation.
  • A food intolerance, coeliac disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • The days around your period.

The NHS lists all of these. The hard part is that several can be true at once, and the mix is different for everyone.

Things to try yourself

  • Eat smaller meals more often instead of one large one.
  • Finish eating a few hours before bed.
  • Eat slowly with your mouth closed, and cut back on fizzy drinks.
  • Drink plenty of water, and eat foods high in soluble fibre if you are constipated.
  • Move: a walk after a meal helps digestion.

Try one change at a time for a week or two, so you know which one helped.

Finding your own pattern

If bloating keeps coming back, write down what you eat, when, and how you feel a few hours later. After two to four weeks most people can see whether it follows certain foods, certain times of day, or neither. Our guide on how to find out which foods make you bloated walks through it.

Questions people also ask

Is it normal to feel bloated after every meal?
Feeling a little full is normal. Feeling bloated after most meals is worth looking into, first with a food diary and then with a GP if it does not settle.
What foods cause the most bloating?
Foods that ferment in the gut, such as beans, lentils, cabbage, onions and some fruits, plus fizzy drinks and sugar-free sweets. Which ones affect you is personal, which is why a diary helps.
Can eating late cause bloating?
Yes. A large meal close to bed is one of the common causes the NHS lists. Finishing earlier for two weeks is an easy test.
